Delight of April Flowers
April has arrived and Mother Nature is tossing bouquets everywhere. Happy spring! Don’t forget to bring some flowers indoors.
My mother loves to garden, but she prefers her flowers outside, blooming on the plants. I would get into trouble as a child because I was forever picking flowers and bringing them in. I want flowers everywhere.
This is the hellebore collection floating in my grandmother’s Fostoria bowl. Their short stems and cup-like blooms mean they are ideal for floating where you can see all their speckles and freckles. It’s been a terrific year for hellebores and I’m going to have to split a couple in the fall.
Hard on their heels are the deeply fragrant sweet violets (Viola odorata). They are very tiny so they get popped into this vintage Delft bud vase I’ve had since I was a young girl. Only lasting a few days, they will perfume the bathroom.
I have managed to mostly outfox the rabbit mafia, so the tulips are abundant! They are also moody and like to watch the world go by from the kitchen windowsill. I am drawn to the more unusual colors. Is there anything so elegant as a single tulip?
