Snowdrops for July
We wait so patiently for snowdrops to deliver their magical little fairy bells in late winter. We’re so anxious for blue skies and slow summer evenings that we check their progress every day. We count the minutes of sunlight as they steadily increase towards the solstice.
Here in the Midwest, July arrives sometimes like a thunderstorm all bluster and bravado, and sometimes like warm honey, sweet and sticky. But, July will come. And I will probably hate it. Again. I am a cold-weather critter.
So, little snowdrops I will cherish your effortless resilience as I crunch out to the back corner to monitor your progress dressed in a coat and warm socks. You’ll be long gone to sleep by the time I’m up at dawn to get some weeding in before heat and humidity chases me in.
Today, though, we will smile and shiver, delicious in the cold.
