Spring Postcards
Yes it snowed. It’s March, after all. But, wait! The early bulbs are blooming and shrugged off that snow while appreciating its much-needed moisture. Hi cuties!
Katherine Hodgkin iris is happy to be here!
Snowdrops are for sanity, but crocus and tiny iris are for dollops of bright color in all the brown of the season. And it is a lot of brown. So I sprinkle crocus like candy-colored confetti around the beds. It reminds me that spring is whispering in our ears. An excerpt of one of my favorite spring poems, A March Glee, by John Burroughs captures the season.
Oh, Spring is surely coming,
Her couriers fill the air;
Each morn are new arrivals,
Each night her ways prepare;
I scent her fragrant garments,
Her foot is on the stair.
These little gems are so easy to tuck into beds in fall. The critters don’t seem to eat them as readily as the delectable tulips. I encourage you to scatter them about, especially next to the doorstep. Give yourself a gift of flowers as early as March.
And when you’ve absolutely had it with late winter gloominess, you go out and buy yourself plants and make up some spring porch pots. Because. Who can resist a hellebore called ‘Shotgun Wedding’? Not me!
