Wish Upon a Pond

Image of a container water garden

I’ve wanted a container pond since forever. This year, I am making it happen! I scored a deal on a huge blue pot, bought myself a papyrus, and have been messing around with pumps. Six trips to the hardware store later…

We have a pond!

There has been so much editing and tweaking for this, but water in the garden makes me happy. We’ve had one fountain for years and it is beloved by us and every robin in the neighborhood.

I will hit the Midwest Pond & Koi Society pond walk now and then to visit stunning water gardens and huge koi. I don’t have the bandwidth for an in-ground pond, so this container water garden is fitting the bill. I have sprayed the interior with black fish-friendly sealant in many many coats. I nicked it once, so its been re-sealed. I like that the black gives it extra depth.

There are five feeder goldfish to manage any mosquito larvae. I’ve chosen water lettuce as a floater and have a water lily from a friend. Three different foliage textures give it depth and diversity.

Am I fussing with it every day? Yes. Have I cussed out the pump? So much. I tend to learn best by doing, and folks, I am learning a lot with this project.

I love it dearly.
